Got Sod? Episode 1: What Is Sod?
Before you lay a single blade in North Texas, understand what sod really is, which warm-season grasses thrive in DFW, and why October might still be the perfect window to install.

A Legacy Rooted in the Soil
A Premiere Rock & Landscaping Educational Series — Episode 1: What Is Sod?
Before We Talk About Sod, Let Me Tell You a Little About Myself.
I'm a second-generation landscaper. I grew up in Missouri, where my father was known for his ability to grow just about anything — fruits, vegetables, plants, trees, and of course beautiful lawns. I always tell people that my dad didn't just have a green thumb. He had TWO GREEN HANDS!
He had a real understanding of the soil, the seasons, and what it took to make things grow. His lawn was something special, and people admired his knowledge of lawn care. As his son, I had a front-row seat to all of it.
My dad put me on a tractor when I was six years old, and I never looked back. I went with him on countless projects, whether I wanted to or not. In fact, I joke that I had a serious "drug problem" growing up — I was DRUG everywhere my dad went! If Dad had a project, I was going. If he was working outside, I was working outside. If he was planting, maintaining, or fixing something, chances were I was standing right beside him.
At the time, I didn't fully appreciate what was happening. I was just being my father's helper. But he was planting something far more valuable than grass or trees — he was planting knowledge, discipline, and a lifelong appreciation for the land.
My father passed away on Father's Day five years ago. Today, one of the greatest honors of my life is realizing I'm doing many of the very things he taught me as a little boy. Those lessons have never left me.
Over the years I've worked alongside seasoned landscaping professionals, spent time at an established landscaping company, and gained industry experience with a private equity organization that acquired landscaping businesses. Each one expanded how I understand this work. And I'm still learning — always looking for better techniques, better materials, and smarter ways to deliver for our clients. But one thing has never changed: you cannot shortcut the fundamentals of growing a healthy lawn.
That brings us to our new educational series.
GOT SOD
First Things First: What Exactly Is Sod?
According to the turfgrass education and establishment principles from Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, sod is a section of living turfgrass harvested with its roots and a thin layer of underlying soil intact. Unlike grass seed, which has to germinate and develop into a lawn, sod is already an established grass surface you can lay directly onto properly prepared ground.
But here's the distinction people miss: just because sod looks like an established lawn doesn't mean it has established itself in your soil. That only happens once the roots start growing into the soil beneath it. Successful establishment depends on soil conditions, moisture, temperature, sunlight, drainage, and proper installation.

The Three Grass Species We Work With in DFW
Here in the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex, homeowners have several warm-season turfgrass options. The three we see most often at Premiere Rock & Landscaping are:
1. St. Augustine Grass — broad blades, dense appearance, and more shade tolerance than most other warm-season grasses.
2. Bermuda Grass — popular across North Texas for its heat tolerance, durability, and ability to recover from wear when conditions are right.
3. Zoysia Grass — a dense, refined turf with a comfortable texture and a range of available varieties.
Each has its own characteristics, advantages, maintenance needs, and environmental preferences — and within each species are multiple varieties (cultivars) that can perform quite differently. In future episodes we'll look at these grasses one by one and explain how we help clients pick the right one for their property.
But today I want to talk about something that surprises a lot of homeowners.
Wait a Minute — You Can Still Install Sod in October?
Yes. And depending on the conditions, you may see installations stretching into November and even December.
It's Not Just About the Temperature Outside
One of the most important factors in establishing new sod is something most homeowners never think about: ground temperature — soil temperature, more specifically. A lot of people assume that once September or October rolls around, the window for installing sod has closed. But the calendar doesn't tell the whole story.
Soil temperature, seasonal weather patterns, available sunlight, moisture, and the specific grass variety all influence whether new sod can develop roots. Here in North Texas we regularly get extended warm weather well into the fall, and when soil temperatures stay favorable, warm-season grasses can keep developing roots later in the year than people expect.
There's a catch, of course. Bermuda, St. Augustine, and Zoysia don't all respond to cooling soil the same way. As temperatures drop, root growth slows and the risk of a late-season install goes up. Dormant sod can survive installation under the right conditions, but it won't establish the way actively growing sod does. That's why we evaluate each property and each grass variety individually. At Premiere, we don't just look at the calendar — we look at the conditions.
Could We Really Be Installing Sod at Christmas?
Believe it or not, yes. Depending on the weather, grass availability, and site conditions, you may occasionally see sod going in during December. We might even have a little CHRISTMAS SOD! LOL!
Does that mean every homeowner should install sod in December? No. Late-season installs take extra care — dormant warm-season grasses, freezing temperatures, watering requirements, and the real possibility that meaningful root establishment won't happen until spring. But don't automatically assume you've missed your chance just because summer is over. There may still be a suitable window for your property, and that's where a professional evaluation makes the difference.
So What Does This Mean for You?
Because of our extended North Texas growing season, Premiere Rock & Landscaping has opened up additional scheduling for sod consultations and installations. Whether you're replacing an entire lawn or just fixing a problem area, we'd love to come take a look at your property.
And here's something you should know about us.
We Don't Just Install Sod. We Stand Behind Our Work.
Over the years we've seen just about every lawn problem imaginable — lawns that wouldn't grow, lawns that looked great for a few months and then declined, lawns fighting drainage issues or inadequate sunlight, lawns with compacted soil, poor composition, and irrigation problems. We've also met homeowners who spent thousands trying to establish a lawn only to be disappointed again and again.
Here's what we've learned: sometimes the problem isn't the grass. Sometimes it's what's underneath it. Sometimes it's the watering, or the sunlight, or a combination of conditions that were never properly addressed. That's why a successful sod installation starts long before the first piece of grass goes down.
Our Commitment Doesn't End on Installation Day
We take pride in the relationships we build with our clients, and our commitment doesn't end when the crew leaves. We provide complimentary consultations and recommendations, stand behind our installations with a workmanship guarantee, and stay available to help you understand how your new lawn is progressing. For many of our installs, it's not unusual for us to come back 60 or even 90 days later to check how the lawn is developing. We also stay in touch with homeowners through photos, texts, and follow-up conversations — because establishing a beautiful lawn is a process, and our clients deserve a partner who understands that. We want your lawn to succeed, not just on installation day but long after we've gone.
Have You Given Up on Your Lawn?
Maybe you've tried growing grass a few times. Maybe you replaced your lawn only to watch it deteriorate again. Maybe you've been told nothing will grow in your backyard, or you're just tired of looking at bare dirt, weeds, and struggling grass. Whatever the situation, we've probably seen something similar, and we'd love the opportunity to help.
Don't be frustrated. Don't assume your property is beyond improvement, and don't feel like you have to figure it all out on your own. Let us come take a look. Our consultations are complimentary, our recommendations come from real-world experience, and our goal is to help you find a practical, lasting solution — whether that's St. Augustine, Bermuda, Zoysia, or another approach entirely.
Got Sod? We Do.
And we'd love to help you get yours growing. Contact Premiere Rock & Landscaping today to schedule your complimentary sod consultation, because at Premiere we believe a beautiful lawn starts with something much deeper than the grass you see.
It starts with understanding what's beneath it.
Coming Up in Our Got Sod? Series
Episode 2: What's Beneath Your Sod? — why soil preparation, soil composition, and proper grading may matter more than the grass itself. We'll dig into nutritious soil, drainage, and why laying fresh sod over existing dirt doesn't always give homeowners the results they expect.
Stay tuned. We're just getting started.
