Turf Pitfalls - Part 2: What's Under Your Turf?
The turf on top may look great. What's underneath it determines whether it stays that way. Here's what homeowners should understand about drainage and base preparation before choosing a turf installer.

The turf on top may look great. What's underneath it determines whether it stays that way.
In Part 1 of our Turf Pitfalls series, we talked about price - and why the lowest synthetic turf quote isn't always the best value.
Synthetic turf is growing rapidly in popularity, and there are more installers offering it than ever before. Unfortunately, installation quality can vary dramatically.
A turf installation can look beautiful on Day 1 and still have serious problems underneath.
One of the biggest things homeowners should ask about?
Drainage.
At Premiere Rock & Landscaping, we believe customers should understand exactly what they're paying for before turf ever goes into the ground.
Synthetic Turf Is More Than Grass on Top of Dirt
A professional synthetic turf installation is a complete ground system.
When designed and installed properly, permeable turf allows rainwater - and, in pet applications, liquids - to move through the turf and into the prepared aggregate base below.
That stone base creates space for water to move underneath the lawn and, with proper grading, toward an appropriate drainage area or outlet.
Think of it as creating a broad drainage layer underneath your lawn.
Will synthetic turf solve every drainage problem? No.
Properties with significant elevation issues, concentrated runoff, poor outlets, foundation concerns, or other challenging conditions may still require French drains, catch basins, channel drains, or other dedicated drainage solutions.
But in many applications, properly designed synthetic turf can dramatically improve the way water moves through an area.
What's Under a Premiere Turf Installation?
This is where installation quality matters.
We typically excavate approximately 4-5 inches, depending on the conditions of the property and the application. From there, the system is rebuilt intentionally.
- Prepared and excavated subgrade - We remove the existing surface and prepare the area rather than simply covering the existing lawn.
- Approximately 4-5 inches of limestone base - The aggregate base provides stability while creating an area through which water can move.
- Crushed limestone screenings - Screenings allow us to fine-grade, smooth, and prepare the final surface before turf installation.
- Infill - The appropriate infill helps support the turf fibers and is selected according to the application.
- Synthetic turf with permeable drainage - Water passes through the turf system rather than simply sitting on top of the lawn.
Installation depth, materials, grading, and drainage design may vary depending on existing soil, elevation, turf product, intended use, and site conditions.
Why This Matters Even More If You Have Pets
Pet turf requires more than choosing a product with the word "pet" on the label.
When dogs use synthetic turf, liquids need somewhere to go.
If the turf is installed over an improperly prepared surface, moisture can become trapped instead of moving efficiently through the system. That can contribute to odor and sanitation problems.
Our base preparation is designed with drainage in mind. This provides an added layer of protection even on properties where the customer doesn't initially anticipate heavy pet use.
It's another reason we believe what's underneath your turf matters just as much as the turf you choose.
Beware of the Shortcut Installation
This is where homeowners can get into trouble.
A lower-priced installation may save money by reducing excavation, using inadequate base material, failing to establish proper grading, or simply covering an existing surface with turf.
And here's the difficult part:
You may not know there's a problem when the installer leaves.
The turf can look great initially.
Problems often become apparent later - after heavy rain, regular use, settling, or pets begin using the area.
By then, correcting the problem can mean pulling the turf back up and rebuilding what should have been installed correctly underneath it in the first place.
Ask These 3 Questions Before Hiring a Turf Installer
Before you sign a synthetic turf contract, ask:
- How deep are you excavating?
- What material - and how much of it - are you installing underneath my turf?
- Where is the water going to go once it passes through the turf?
A professional installer should be able to explain the answers in plain language.
If the entire conversation is about the turf product itself and nobody is talking about excavation, base preparation, grading, compaction, or drainage, ask more questions before moving forward.
Experience Matters
At Premiere Rock & Landscaping, our professional turf installation team brings more than 10 years of field experience across many different synthetic turf applications.
We don't believe in simply selling you a roll of artificial grass.
We evaluate the property.
We look at how water moves.
We consider how the space will be used.
And then we recommend an installation system designed for that specific application.
Because a quality turf installation isn't just about creating a beautiful lawn today.
It's about building what's underneath it correctly so you can enjoy it for years to come.
Considering synthetic turf? Whether you're considering synthetic grass, building a pet-friendly backyard, dealing with a difficult lawn, or simply trying to create a more usable outdoor space, we're happy to evaluate your property.
