Installing synthetic turf is a major investment. And if you've never had turf installed before, how do you know what a quality installation actually looks like?

Over the next several articles, we're going to break down what homeowners should look for when choosing a turf contractor.

Today, Let's Talk About Price

In the Dallas-Fort Worth market, it's not unusual for a professionally installed synthetic turf system to cost around $12 or more per square foot - depending on the turf product, site conditions, demolition requirements, drainage design, access, and installation specifications.

So when someone offers turf for $5 or $6 per square foot, don't just ask how much it costs. Ask what you're getting for that price.

What We Saw at a Recent Property

We recently visited a property where the homeowner had paid approximately $5.50 per square foot for a synthetic turf installation. The project was only about three months old - but you would never have guessed it.

The surface was extremely uneven and lumpy. The base underneath had not been properly established - and that base is one of the most critical components of any quality turf installation. It determines how the surface feels underfoot, how it drains, and how long it lasts.

Even more surprising was the weed growth. The turf was so covered with weeds that portions looked more like an unmanaged field than a three-month-old synthetic lawn.

Can an occasional weed appear in synthetic turf? Absolutely. Airborne seeds and organic material can settle into the turf fibers and sometimes germinate near the surface. But what we saw was something entirely different - it was a systemic failure rooted in how the installation was approached from day one.

And Here's Where the Inexpensive Installation Becomes Expensive

The homeowner saved money upfront. But now he's facing ongoing weed removal and maintenance on a lawn he purchased specifically to reduce maintenance.

Correcting significant installation problems may ultimately require portions - or even all - of the turf system to be removed and properly rebuilt.

The initial savings disappeared. And then some.

Price Matters. But Value Matters More.

Before choosing a turf contractor, ask to see completed installations. If possible, visit a finished project in person. Even with a newer company, ask to see work they've completed and request customer references.

A quality contractor should be able to clearly explain:

  • What's underneath your turf - the base composition and depth
  • How drainage is addressed - what happens when it rains hard in DFW
  • How the turf is secured - nailing, gluing, or a combination
  • How seams and edges are finished - the details that separate a professional from a day-laborer job
  • Why their process produces a different result

If a contractor can't answer those questions in plain language, that's your answer.

The Bottom Line

The turf you see is only the top layer. The quality of what you don't see underneath it often determines how that lawn will perform for years to come.

Don't choose your turf contractor based on price alone. Do your homework. Look at the work. Ask questions. Understand what you're buying.

Because doing it correctly the first time is almost always far less expensive than paying someone to fix it later.

Next up in the series: Part 2 - The Base. We'll discuss what should actually be underneath synthetic turf and why proper base preparation can make or break the entire installation.
