Pavers vs. Poured Concrete: Which Is Right for Your Texas Patio?

Every year, we get calls from homeowners whose freshly poured concrete patio has developed a network of cracks — sometimes within the first 12 months. In Texas, that timeline can be even shorter. The extreme heat cycles, clay soil expansion, and occasional hard freezes create a brutal environment for rigid slabs.

So is poured concrete ever the right call? And what makes pavers the better option in most cases?

Why Concrete Struggles in Texas

Concrete is monolithic — it moves as one piece. When the ground shifts (and Texas clay soil shifts constantly), the slab cracks. Those cracks aren't just cosmetic; they trap water, promote weed growth, and grow larger over time.

Common issues with poured concrete in Texas:

  • Thermal cracking from extreme heat expansion
  • Soil movement from clay shrink/swell cycles
  • Settling and trip hazards
  • Expensive full-slab replacement when damaged

Why Pavers Win

Interlocking pavers are installed on a prepared aggregate base with sand between each unit. This means:

  • Flexibility — they move with the ground without cracking
  • Repairability — replace one paver, not an entire slab
  • Drainage — water filters through the joints naturally
  • Longevity — properly installed pavers routinely last 25–30+ years

The Cases Where Concrete Still Makes Sense

  • Very large, flat commercial areas where paver installation cost is prohibitive
  • Structural applications (foundations, retaining walls)
  • When budget is strictly limited and aesthetics are secondary

Material Options We Recommend

Travertine — Natural stone, stays cooler underfoot than concrete, premium look.

Concrete Pavers — Engineered for durability, wide range of styles and colors, lower cost than natural stone.

Flagstone — Irregular, natural look; excellent for garden paths and rustic patios.
