How to Choose the Right Turf for a Texas Summer
Not all artificial turf is built the same — and in a Texas summer, the wrong choice can mean scorching temps and flattened fibers. Here's what to look for.

How to Choose the Right Turf for a Texas Summer
If you've ever walked barefoot on cheap artificial turf in July, you know the problem. The surface temperature can hit 160°F or more — hot enough to burn skin and melt low-quality infill. Here in North Texas, that's not a hypothetical. It's Tuesday.
So how do you choose a turf that actually holds up?
1. Look at the Pile Height
Shorter isn't always better. A pile height of 1.5" to 2" offers the best balance of realism and heat dissipation. Taller blades trap more heat at the base.
2. Check the Infill
The infill material makes or breaks a turf installation in Texas. Avoid black crumb rubber, which absorbs and retains heat aggressively. Instead, look for:
- Silica sand infill — cooler, more stable
- Duracool or HydroChill infill — specifically engineered to reduce surface temps by up to 50°F through evaporative cooling
3. Drainage Rate Matters More Than You Think
Texas storms drop a lot of rain fast. Your turf system should drain at a rate of at least 30 inches per hour to prevent pooling, mold, and infill displacement.
4. UV Stabilization
After 5 years of direct Texas sun, low-quality turf turns a yellowish-green. Look for turf with 8-year minimum UV stabilization warranties and colorfast technology.
5. Pet-Grade vs. Landscape-Grade
If you have dogs, the rules change. Pet-grade turf uses antimicrobial infill and a more open drainage backing. It's worth the upgrade — for obvious reasons.
